The Santa Barbara Film Festival

is a unique event mixes the high-caliber talent of larger, international festivals with the casual feel and accessibility of smaller, community festivals.

My first assignment for the Santa Barbara Film Festival was a poster for Warren Beatty’s Kirk Douglass Award for Excellence in Film ceremony. I wanted to highlight a few of Beatty’s most iconic rolls. So I went with a minimal design that would ignite a response from Beatty fans and engage those who are less familiar with his work.

SBIFF had never used Snapchat before I took over as their event’s media coordinator. I thought geofilters would be a great, low-cost way to encourage organic engagement. The first feature the Arlington Theatre, the historic movie house at the heart of the festival. The second mixed art nouveau elements with lighting bolts in honor of the festival’s opening feature Charged - the story of a chef who almost died after being electrocuted in the Montana backcountry.

The filters were used 1,000 times. And were viewed close to 40,000 times.
